How It Works

Speed of Light

Light travels through a vacuum at a constant speed of exactly 299,792,458 meters per second (approximately 299,792 km/s or 186,282 miles/s). This is the fastest speed at which information or energy can travel in the universe.

Calculating Travel Time

The travel time is calculated by dividing the distance by the speed of light:

Time = Distance ÷ Speed of Light

For example, the Sun is approximately 1 AU (149,597,870.7 km) from Earth. Light covers this distance in about 8 minutes and 20 seconds.

  • Astronomical Unit (AU) — The mean distance from Earth to the Sun: 149,597,870.7 km.
  • Light Year (ly) — The distance light travels in one Julian year: 9,460,730,472,580.8 km.
  • Parsec (pc) — Based on stellar parallax: 3.26156 light years or 30,856,775,814,913.7 km.
Important Notes
  • Distances to celestial objects change over time due to orbital motion. Preset values are typical or mean distances.
  • Light travels slightly slower in media other than vacuum (e.g., glass, water), but in space the vacuum speed applies.
  • For very distant objects, the expansion of the universe means the object is now farther away than the space travel time would suggest.
